DJ Vistar is the artist persona of Vuyo Magwa, an actor, artist, DJ and producer from Western Cape, South Africa. Magwa started DJing in 2008 before moving into production a year later. His story tells of a young man from a humble background who used to collect his neighbours’ old records, and for whom music proved an escape and catharsis from the pain and struggle of growing up with an abusive father. A wonderful instrumentalist and composer, his music channels the revolutionist, Socialist-inspired jazz championed by the likes of Jimmy Dludlu, Donlaka, as well as deep house producers such as Black Coffee, Julian Gomez, Atjazz, Cuebur and more. On the back of his previous three releases on SRNDR Records, namely "Cape to London", “Vistar’s Award” and "Soul After", Magwa is back with his latest Afro house masterpiece,“Heaven”, a track that truly lives up to its name. With its rolling organic percussions, a bassline that recalls the classic meanderings of the Africanism stable, a subtle but melodic topline, and lush atmospheric synths, the release would make a great addition to the musical library of fans of Osunlade, Atjazz, Jimspter, Dennis Ferrer and more.
Aside from SRNDR, Magwa's music has been released by labels such as Late Night Sounds Records and Black Hole Recordings. His music has received support from the likes of Siphe Tebeka, Tarezo Bathate, Mr Thela, DJ Fresh SA, SoulFreakah, Marcos Hernandez, Problem Child Ten83 and many more.
