Evan De Novellis is an Italian DJ and producer whose passion lies in crafting beautifully emotive explorations within the genre of melodic techno. His first exposure to electronic music came courtesy of the ambient explorations of Moby, inspiring in him an appreciation for music that evokes a sense of melancholy. He then fell for techno inspired by the works of artists such as Paul Kalkbrenner, Stephan Bodzin and Sam Paganini. De Novellis started producing at the age of 17 and has been making music since, with a sound that blurs the line between progressive house and techno, and is typified by dark, energetic sounds and melodies that stir both the senses and emotions.
De Novellis joins the SRNDR family with a trilogy of introspective works that typify his signature emotive and melodic techno sound. Collectively, the tracks provide an insight into his inner workings and a narrative of his life. “Tension”, the first of the releases, tells the story of a muddled mind affected by stress and anxiety. Driven by a strong, relentless bassline and a simple but memorably haunting topline, the track recreates the sense of uncertainty and tension through atmospheric synths created from the Moog Grandmother. The release peaked at #23 on the Beatport Melodic House & Techno Hype Top 100 chart.
'Noir', part two of the trilogy, is a deep, atmospheric melodic techno track that is as dark as the name suggests. Written during a difficult period in his life as he went through depression, the track represents the darkness that resided in him, even as he tried to hide it from those around him by putting on a brave front. The track conveys this beautifully, with an undertone that is dark and haunting and a nuanced arrangement that reflects the volatility of inner turmoil.
The third and last of the trilogy is "Innocence". While the first two, "Tension" and “Noir”, were reflective of the struggles that he has had to endure and overcome in his life, "Innocence" offers an altogether contrasting tone, focusing on the purity that exists within all of us, from the innocence of children to the goodness of people. It celebrates the pure joy and happiness that comes with pursuing one's love and passion, and anything else that comes from the heart. The track features a more driving rhythm and beefier kick than its predecessors but retains the emotive melodies and sense of atmosphere and drama. The arpeggiated harp-like topline is a particular highlight - light, airy but with a sense of melancholy, making for a delightful counterpoint to the solid low-ends.
